Key Equipment was formed in June of 2008 with the purchase of 82 Rents, a Chester County, Pennsylvania rental center started in 1998. Since the 2008 purchase Key has transformed the company from a local landscape and builder rental center into a regional industrial-commercial lift company serving Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Southern New York.
As an Authorized Dealer for Genie, JLG, Broderson, Skyjack, Manitex, Biljax and other leading manufactures Key is able to provide rentals, sales, parts, service and training on a full spectrum of lifting equipment.
Key is a privately held corporation owned by Brian and Al Funk, veterans of the lift equipment industries. In 1982 Al Funk was hired by the Modern Group, Bristol PA, to start an aerial lift division. This company, Modern HiLift, was launched in Conshohocken with Mr. Funk and one employee. By 1993 this division grew to five locations in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland with approximately $25 million in annual revenue and 35 employees. During this time Al introduced the Broderson Carry Deck crane to Modern and became one of the country's top Broderson Dealers. This period also started dealer relationships with Genie, Terex, JLG, MEC, and other leading manufactures. With Modern HiLift's access equipment and Modern Handling's Hyster forklifts the industrial contractor had a single source for lifting equipment.
Al's son Brian Funk was hired by Modern HiLift in 1993 after completing his Bachelors' Degree at West Chester University. Brian quickly moved into a sales position and was assigned a territory in Central Pennsylvania with responsibilities of opening the Lancaster Branch and developing customer accounts. Brian was immediately successful in sales and was a four time winner of the Salesmen of the Year award. During Brian's career at Modern he had responsibilities in PA, NJ and DE and developed experience in sales, rentals, and operations. When Brian and Al Funk left Modern in 2005 the equipment company had grown to 11 locations and over $45 million in annual sales. The formula of providing lift equipment, Broderson cranes, forklifts and support equipment generated outstanding results.
In August of 2011 Stephan Brown joined Key Equipment as VP of Sales. Steve has extensive experience successfully selling and supporting cranes and lifting equipment throughout the Mid- Atlantic region. Mr. Brown's business and personal life goes back a long way with the Funks; in the early days of the lift industry Al Funk and Dennis O'Neil operated Tri-State Equipment and Free State. Steve Brown and Micheal Kneeland were the salesmen working under Al Funk. Steve joined Al at Modern Group soon after Modern HiLift was founded. Steve had a long and successful career at Modern before joining Key as Vice President, Sales. Mr. Kneeland went on to a successful career at Equipment Supply and subsequently United Rentals, and is now CEO of United Rentals.
Ronald Beam serves as Key's General Manager and has daily responsibilities for rentals, sales, service and trucking. Mr. Beam also coordinates Key's DOT compliance, Human Resources and invoicing. His seven years in the rental business coupled with 20 years in contracting is a vital resource for Key Equipment. Ron prides himself on taking care of his customer's needs and issues and is critical component of Key's growth and success.
Larry Turnbull joined Key Equipment in April of 2010 and brings over 25 years of successful experience as CFO, Comptroller, and corporate Treasurer. Mr. Turnbull holds a BS in Business Administration from Kansas State University and has a proven record of guiding growing companies through the financial stages of growth, profitability and equity retention.
